When building or repairing brickwork, the strength and durability of the wall depend not only on the bricks themselves but also on how well the mortar bonds to them. Good adhesion ensures that the wall remains stable, resists moisture and frost, and maintains its appearance for decades. But what exactly creates a strong bond between mortar and brick? Here’s a practical guide to achieving reliable adhesion—whether you’re laying new brick or repointing an older wall.
Understanding What Creates Adhesion
The bond between mortar and brick depends on several factors: the texture of the brick surface, its moisture content, the composition of the mortar, and the way the work is carried out. When mortar is applied, it should penetrate slightly into the pores of the brick and harden there. If the brick is too dry, it will absorb water from the mortar too quickly, weakening the bond. If it’s too wet or too smooth, the mortar won’t grip properly.
Good adhesion, therefore, is all about balance—both in materials and in technique.
Preparation: Clean and Dampen the Bricks
Before you start laying bricks, make sure the surfaces are clean. Remove dust, old mortar, paint, or oil that could prevent the mortar from bonding. A stiff brush or a damp cloth usually does the job, depending on how dirty the surface is.
Next, lightly dampen the bricks. You can mist them with water or dip them briefly in a bucket. They should be moist but not dripping—no visible water film on the surface. This prevents the brick from drawing too much water out of the mortar and allows the mortar to cure properly.
Choose the Right Mortar
There are several types of mortar, and the right choice depends on both the type of brick and the purpose of the work.
- Lime mortar is often used for historic buildings and softer bricks. It’s flexible and breathable, reducing the risk of cracking and allowing moisture to escape.
- Portland cement mortar is stronger and more water-resistant, making it suitable for modern construction and exposed areas such as foundations or chimneys. However, it can be too rigid for older, softer bricks.
- Blended mortar (lime-cement) combines strength and flexibility and is a good all-around choice for many residential projects.
Whatever type you use, the consistency should be just right—not too dry and not too runny. A good rule of thumb is that the mortar should stick to the trowel without sliding off but still be easy to spread.
Work at the Right Pace
When laying bricks, work steadily so the mortar doesn’t dry out before the brick is set in place. Spread an even layer of mortar, press the brick firmly into it, and move it slightly back and forth to ensure full contact. Excess mortar that squeezes out can be tooled into the joints later.
Avoid working in direct sunlight or strong wind, as these conditions cause the mortar to dry too quickly. In cold weather, don’t lay brick if the temperature is below 40°F (about 5°C), since curing slows down and the bond weakens. If necessary, use cold-weather additives or protective coverings to maintain proper curing conditions.
Check the Joints
Joints are not just decorative—they play a key role in the wall’s strength and weather resistance. Make sure the joints are completely filled and that the mortar is pressed in firmly. When the mortar begins to set, tool the joints with a jointer to compact the surface and make it more resistant to water penetration.
If you’re repointing old brickwork, remove loose mortar to a depth of about ½ to ¾ inch, clean the area, and lightly dampen it before applying new mortar. This ensures that the new mortar bonds well to the old.

Even small errors can weaken adhesion and shorten the life of the masonry. Here are some common pitfalls to avoid:
- Bricks too dry – absorb water from the mortar too quickly.
- Surfaces too smooth – especially with machine-made or glazed bricks, which make it harder for mortar to grip.
- Mortar too hard – can cause cracking in both mortar and brick, especially in older walls.
- Poor cleaning – dust and debris act as a barrier between brick and mortar.
By avoiding these mistakes, you’ll create brickwork that remains strong and attractive for years to come.
Maintenance and Inspection
Even the best masonry needs occasional attention. Check periodically that the joints are intact and look for signs of cracking or flaking. Small repairs made early can prevent larger problems later. If you notice dark spots or damp areas, it may indicate water infiltration—address it promptly to prevent damage.
